Natural gas leaks are a rising problem. On average, about 17 people die due to gas leaks every year in America. If you don’t take the appropriate measures to manage gas leaks immediately after detection, it can lead to a lot of problems. Here are some ways to detect gas leaks.
1. Identify Weird or Unusual Smells
Natural gas is produced with a very particular smell for the purpose of detection. Since gas leaks can be deadly, gas companies have to take precautions with smells so they can be detected. If any part of your home has a smell similar to those of sulfur, rotten eggs, or trash in the air, then that is a tell-tale sign of a gas leak.
2. Monitor the Gas Bill
Chances are you’re used to paying roughly the same amount of money for your gas every month. Monitor your gas bills every month and if you ever notice a sudden rise in charges despite you doing nothing to cause it, then that means your gas is most likely leaking out and wasting away.
3. Perform a Test
If hearing for sounds is difficult because you live in a loud neighborhood then you can perform a small test to identify if there’s a leak. For this, you’ll need to identify the gas pipes or chambers.
Make a solution of a small amount of dish soap with about a cup of water and apply some of it to the gas pipes with a cloth. A normally functioning system will not cause any reactions but natural gas leakage will react with the solution and make it bubble. If you see bubbling, that’s a clear sign of a leak.
4. Follow the Hissing Sounds
Gas leaks through tiny holes in gas pipes. As it does so, it creates hissing or whistling sounds that are often difficult to identify in a noisy household but you should definitely take a quiet moment out to hear for them. Turn off background sounds and listen for any unusual hissing sounds. If you know where the gas pipes or chambers are installed, identify unusual sounds there.
5. Dying House Plants
Natural gas contains chemical properties that can cause damage to plants. If your house plants are dying, i.e., faltering or their leaves are losing color, then that indicates that there’s natural gas in your home atmosphere.
