America is among the countries that produce the most garbage waste throughout the world. Since we produce so much waste daily, we must also understand how to dispose of it properly. The most common way to dispose of kitchen and food waste is through the garbage disposals that we all have.
Here are some dos and don’ts of using a garbage disposal.
DO Run Cold Water While Disposing
It’s best to use high-pressure cold water while disposing of foods because it will help them stay non-sticky and pass through quicker. Cold water solidifies otherwise soft foods and makes it easier for them to be ground up into smaller pieces and passed down through the drains without causing clogging.
DO Keep It Clean
This should go without saying but keeping your garbage disposal clean is essential for it to work well. Over time, all the different foods leave behind particles that can rot away and cause clogging. You can clean your disposal by running some soap or detergent alongside cold water through it.
DO Use It Regularly
You might not know this but not using your disposal regularly can cause it to start rusting and corroding away. Use your garbage disposal as regularly as possible (without overusing it) to keep it moving, so that you don’t run the risk of damage or constant repairs.
DON’T Grind Hard/Expandable/Greasy Materials
Food materials that are too hard, like nuts or large bones, are likely to damage your disposal. Even softer foods can cause damage if the pieces are too big. You should never put greasy or oily foods into the disposal either because they always leave behind particles that will cause blockages and clogs. There are other proper ways you can dispose of them. Foods that expand in water, like rice, should also not be put into garbage disposals.
DON’T Run Hot Water While Disposing
Many people think that using hot water makes the process of disposing of foods down garbage disposal easier and smoother. This is not true. Although hot water can help break the pieces down and make food easier to grind and slide through the pipes, it can also make it mushy and gummy. This makes food stick to the sides of pipes and clogs the drain.
DON’T Use Harsh Chemicals
Many people use chemicals like bleach or lye to clean their garbage disposals. You could not make a worse decision! These products are too harsh to just clean the machine. They will also eat away at the metal lining of your disposal and ruin the mechanisms.
