At Wasden Plumbing, we understand that there are some plumbing problems that a regular plumber can’t fix. So we have trained and acquired the skills needed to become master plumbers. Whether it’s a complex water heater replacement or an extensive remodel, our plumbers, who are part of the small percentage of plumbers holding a master plumbing license can handle it—but what is a master plumbing licensing? Let’s take a look.

What Is a Master Plumber License?

A master plumbing license is awarded to a plumber who has achieved the highest professional level of plumbing. There are several steps to follow in a set order to become a master plumber.

Master plumbers can also choose to specialize in one area. They install, maintain, and repair a system. Their duties include leak repair and maintenance, replacements, monitoring other plumbers, etc. In the whole country, there are currently only 225,000 master plumbers.

License Requirements

To become a master plumber, you need to follow some steps:

1. Graduate High School

To become a master plumber, you must have graduated high school. You can also make do with a GED. This is a prerequisite for entering the apprenticeship program that will put you on the path to becoming a master plumber.

2. Apply For a Plumbing Apprenticeship

Acquire knowledge and the skills needed to become a master plumber by enrolling in a plumbing apprenticeship. You’ll be under the supervision of another master plumber or a journeyman and you’ll get ‘on-the-job’ training. Every apprenticeship is different, but it can take two to five years. Before you apply, you must do a program evaluation and check if it’s government-approved.

3. Learn Relevant Skills

Master plumbers need skills for success and growth. Some skills you should focus on include the following:

Coordination: Plumbers must work in small spaces with multiple tools and equipment. Good coordination skills are necessary to navigate such confined places safely.

Communication: Plumbers need to have great listening skills to understand what problems their client is facing and explain the situation to them.

Reading Blueprints: It’s essential for master plumbers to know how to read blueprints for proper fixture and appliance installations.

Technical Knowledge: Plumbers must have the technical knowledge to work with complex plumbing systems.

4. Sit The Journeyman Plumbing Licensure Exam

After working with a supervisor and gaining enough knowledge and experience, you’ll need to sit a journeyman plumber licensing exam. The requirements will vary according to the state. Still, you will receive the certification from the National Inspection Testing and Certification Corporation (NITC), regardless of the state where you take the exam.

In addition, depending on the state, you’ll need to renew it every three to five years.

5. Take The Master Plumbing License Exam

Once you’ve gathered three to four years of experience as a journeyman plumber, you can take the master plumbing licensing exam. You’ll need a statement of experience and a declaration of lawful presence. You can sit the exam when you have the requirements and have filled out the application.
