Condensing boilers don’t look too different from conventional boilers. They also work using the same principles—except for one improvement that changes everything.
To understand how condensing boilers work and how they improve on conventional boilers, we interviewed our Master Plumbers in Rowlett, TX. Here’s what we learned.
How Conventional Boilers Work
Conventional boilers work by heating water using energy produced from gas combustion. The combusted gas passes through a heat exchanger that tries to capture as much energy from the gas as possible. The exchanger then transfers this energy to water, heating it. The combusted gas is then exhausted through an exhaust fan via a flue.
How Condensing Boilers Work
Condensing boilers work the same way, except for one additional step. Instead of exhausting the combustion gas after it passes through the heat exchanger, condensing boilers capture it into a condensing chamber. In the condensing chamber, the combusted gas loses its energy and preheats the water for the main heat exchanger. This minimizes energy waste and improves efficiency.
Ways Condensing Boilers Are Better Than Conventional Boilers
To sum up, conventional boilers only use some of the energy from the combusted gas to heat the water while exhausting the used hot gas from the flue. Condensing boilers don’t waste any hot gas and use the maximum energy released from combustion to heat the water. Here’s what it amounts to:
- Conventional boilers normally use 65% of the available energyto heat up the water. Even the most efficient ones can only reach an efficiency of 85%. By comparison, condensing boilers can reach an efficiency of up to 98%.
- Conventional boilers have to have a flue, making them harder to install and maintain than exhaust-free condensing boilers.
- Conventional boilers release greenhouse gasses into the air. Condensing boilers have a much lower impact on the environment.
